The Census Bureau's annual household income report for 2024 was published a few weeks ago. We've now compiled a few tables for the 50 states and DC based on the Current Population Survey, a joint undertaking of the Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics, which includes annual data from 1984 to 2024
The median US income in 2024 was $83,730, up from $22,420 in 1984 — a 274% rise over the 40-year time frame. However, if we adjust for inflation chained in 2024 dollars, the 1984 median is $60.420 and the increase drops to 39%.
Peak Income Years
The peak annual median income for the U.S. is now at an all-time high. Here is an alphabetically sorted table showing the data for the 50 states and D.C. along with the U.S. median data.

The alphabetical listing above makes it easy to find individual states, but for some additional insight, let's sort the data based on the decline from the peak year.
The real median household incomes in 15 states are currently at an all-time high. Three states are less than one percent from their respective peak years, 15 are between 1-5% off their peak, 17 are between 5-9% off their peak, and Wyoming is the sole state more than 10% off its real median income peak from 2013.
